Installation Almost Complete

Installation work is almost complete! Most of the mural panels have been installed and the mural team has started on over painting. Enjoy these photos and stop by the school to check it out if you have a chance. Installation will likely wrap up this week. And don’t forget: The mural will be dedicated as part of the annual Lyndale Back-to-School Open House/Ice Pop Social on August 25.

Paint Parties: Fun, Food and PAINT

On Saturday, May 17, 160 people came together on the Lyndale Community School playground to paint 5×5 panels of the Lyndale Mural at the first of two Community Paint parties. Painters enjoyed a meal provided by Youth Farm and the music of Dj Odiño during this wonderful community event. The Lyndale Neighborhood Association sponsored the second Community Paint Party on Wednesday, May 25, at Painter Park, just a few short blocks from Lyndale School. An amazing 300+ community members came out to paint mural panels, listen to the Roe Family Singers and share the Lyndale Community Dinner provided by Zion Lutheran Church. Thanks to all who came together to make these such successful events: Lyndale Community School, Greta McLain + Good Space Murals, the Lyndale Neighborhood Association, Youth Farm, Painter Park, Dj Odiño, the Roe Family Singers, Zion Church/Lyndale Community Dinner, the Cooking Matters program (UMN), and the Lyndale PTO.

The mural is now in the Good Space Mural Studio, where Greta and the Mural Team are working to complete the panels and prepare them for installation this summer. Projected dates for the mural install are July 13 – July 28. Follow us here and on the Lyndale PTO Facebook page for updates – we’ll let you know exactly when it’s happening so you can stop by and watch!

The mural will be dedicated on August 25 as part of the annual Lyndale Back-to-School Open House/Ice Pop Social. A short video documenting the mural process will be shown – stay tuned for more details.

Mural Painting in Art Class

Mural painting began last week in Ms. Walker’s art classes. Greta, Claudia, and Jacqui (aka the mural team) were at Lyndale School all week to work with students in every grade level and every art class. Ms. Walker, the mural team, and a number of parent volunteers guided Lyndale students in painting 5×5 panels of the actual mural – it was an amazing week!

Students will be painting the mural with Ms. Walker, Greta McLain, and the mural team, in art classes from Monday, April 4 – Friday, April 8. They would love to have an extra set of hands in each class – can you help? Find out more about when and how

The Mural is Coming!

Over the last few months, Greta McLain has been working furiously on the design of our mural. Final touches are in progress! What we can say for sure—it’s going to be COLORFUL. The mural tells a story about our community—the wonder of play, the wonder of reading, the wonder of music—with textile patterns from around the world and shout outs to Lyndale icons:  the Walking School Bus, Lyndale School Song, Reading Club, Orchestra/Band, Rope Power and more. Plus, fabulous creatures Lyndale students created in art class during mural design week last December. Check out these examples—which do you think will show up in the mural?

Greta and her team will transfer the final sketches onto 5ft x 5ft pieces of cloth and then bring all of that along with a whole lot of paint to Ms. Walker’s art class. Painting begins the week after spring break. Every Lyndale student will get a hand on the mural.

The after school mural classes begin April 5.  There are still a few spots open! Send in your Community Education form!
